The University of Guelph is one of the most popular schools, with a moderately selective acceptance rate of 66 percent. The University of Guelph provides undergraduate, graduate, certificate, and associate degree programs in a variety of fields.

Info about the University of Guelph 

The University of Guelph was founded in 1964 when the Ontario Agricultural College, Macdonald Institute, and Ontario Veterinary College merged to form the University of Guelph. The university prides itself on its agricultural, food, and veterinary sciences reputation. 

With over 450 work-study positions on campus for students in financial need and 1000+ on-campus part-time employment available all year, it provides an exceptional combination of experiential learning and co-op programs. 

They have around 3500 students registered in their co-op programs. 

Within 11 faculties, the institution provides over 90 majors and minors for undergraduate degrees. 

There are also up to 130 master’s degrees, PhDs, and graduate diplomas available. 

There are also 17 varsity teams, 22 sports clubs, and over 200 student clubs and organizations, all of which are represented by the “Guelph Gryphons,” the university’s athletic team. 

Admission to the University of Guelph is also open to international students. Out of a total of 3000 students, about 1500 international students were enrolled in the university in the autumn of 2018. 

International students made up 3.8 percent of the 26,741 undergraduate students and 16.4 percent of the 2904 graduate students. 

The university is also noted for its gorgeous settings, secure campuses, and friendly atmosphere. 

It guarantees that the setting encourages students to experiment with new ideas and share them. 

The renowned War Memorial Hall and Rozanksi Hall are now used as student lecture halls as well as a conventional theatre. 

In addition, the Science Complex is regarded as North America’s largest integrated science complex for teaching and research. 

The famous Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, which is part of the university, is home to the world’s first DNA barcoding center.

Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Guelph 

Students who have completed a minimum of one year of study in two or three-year community college programs are encouraged to apply to the University of Guelph. 

The use of transfer credits varies depending on the degree program and speciality into which you have been accepted. 

Applicants who have finished a two-year college diploma program can often obtain up to 5.0 credits (1 year), whereas those who have completed a three-year college diploma program can typically receive up to 10.0 credits (2 years). 

However, depending on the program you’ve applied to, you may need to complete high school standards as well. 

All undergraduate programs consider university transfer students. All entrance points within various programs will be evaluated for applicants who have completed a minimum of 2.0 credits (one semester) of study.

Those with less are usually only evaluated for the Fall semester. 

When you receive an admissions offer, you are usually assigned transfer credits.

Graduate Admissions at the University of Guelph 

Graduate school is unique. Unlike undergraduate programs, most graduate schools require you to take charge of your studies in whatever way that comes your way. 

Your studies will also extend beyond textbooks and lecture halls. 

Our graduate students frequently work in research labs, complete studio art, direct undergraduate labs or seminars, and travel to far-flung locations for fieldwork. 

Each year, the University of Guelph accepts graduate applications in accordance with the school’s established standards and guidelines. 

These norms and requirements, however, may differ per department, so graduate applicants should check the department’s website before applying. 

Nonetheless, everyone must go through the same admissions process.

Rankings of the University of Guelph 

While the University of Guelph is now ranked among Canada’s top 100 universities (nationally), it has yet to make the top 500 universities worldwide. According to the US News & World Report rankings for 2021, the University of Guelph is ranked #483. Academics, admissions, course popularity, and other ranking criteria are heavily weighted in US News & World Report’s rankings. However, because of its admission criteria, intake, and selection process, University of Guelph Admissions has a significant share. As a result, university rankings are determined based on these factors. 

The University of Guelph is ranked a notch higher than US News & World Report in the 501-600 range for 2021. 

This 501-600 rank range has stayed steady for the past three years, from 2019 to 2021. University of Guelph, on the other hand, is ranked higher than both of the aforementioned rating organizations, in the range of 551-600 for 2021. For University of Guelph, the various ranking factors have been graded below average by QS rankings. Citations: 40.8; employer reputation: 31.1; international students’ ratio: 15.7; academic reputation: 13.8; and no total score because University of Guelph is ranked in the top 500 universities worldwide. 

Is there any financial help or scholarships available to international students? 

Bursaries are not available to international students. Entrance and In-Course Scholarships are available to international undergraduate students. Total merit-based international scholarships at the University of Guelph vary from CAD 17,500 to CAD 20,500 over four years. Students who have registered for both the Fall and Winter semesters in their first year and paid full-time student tuition and fees are eligible for the Entrance Scholarships. To be considered for this scholarship, undergraduate students must submit the complete application together with all required documentation. In-course Scholarships are university-funded or alumni-funded course-specific scholarships and awards. It’s a need-based scholarship that requires students to complete the Undergraduate International Student Financial Need Assessment Form (NAF).

What is the number of international students enrolled at the university? 

Between 2015 and 2019, the total number of enrolments at Guelph increased by 5.3 percent across all programs. Enrollment climbed by 3.7 percent for undergraduates and 22.4 percent for graduate students. In the 2019-2020 academic year, approximately 30,000 students were admitted, with over 1,700 international students from nearly 130 countries. The University of Guelph has a total of 29,923 students enrolled in Fall 2019, with 26,888 undergraduate students and 3,035 graduate students. The number of international undergraduate students enrolled climbed by 46.6 percent and the number of international graduate students enrolled increased by 60.2 percent between 2015 and 2019.

Is it possible for me to work while I study here? 

Part-time work on campus is available to any international students with a valid study permit. Students can work part-time under the Work-Study program. While the institution is in session, international students can work part-time on campus for up to 20 hours per week. Students can work full-time for up to 40 hours during breaks and vacations. Is there any on-campus housing? 

Students are encouraged to stay in their on-campus housing homes since it is a terrific way to meet new people and form a community. Another benefit of living on campus is that students are only a few minutes away from class and have access to the college’s different eating options. Off-campus accommodation is also available, with students able to rent shared/single rooms, houses, or flats. The institution has set aside a few three-person townhomes near campus for international graduate students. Guelph also has five Graduate Houses near campus, each of which may accommodate four to six persons.

Admissions Criteria 

You must have a 3.0 – 3.9/ 4.0 cumulative unweighted GPA from a regionally accredited high school (varies by program/major). 

The University of Guelph is making the SAT/ACT optional for the Fall 2022 entrance cycle in response to the epidemic. The results (if submitted) will be taken into account if they help the student and strengthen their application; nevertheless, students who do not submit a score will not be penalized.
