Is It Possible to Apply to Yale Early?

Yale has both standard and early action application deadlines. The early action deadline is November 1st, and you’ll find out if you’ve been accepted by December 15th.

Yale’s early action program is a single-choice early action program, meaning you can only apply early to one school (Yale), although your entrance is not guaranteed.

Statistically, applying early gives you a slightly better chance of getting into Yale than applying for a normal decision, but the difference isn’t significant. We don’t advocate applying early if Yale isn’t your top choice because you won’t be able to apply early anywhere else.

What grade point average do I need to get into Yale?

To be accepted to Yale, you must have the highest GPA in your class.

The average GPA of Yale admitted students is 4.12. This means that in order to be competitive with other applications, you’ll need essentially straight A’s. In fact, 94 percent of admitted students were in the top 10% of their class when they graduated.

You’ll also need to take AP and/or IB classes to raise your GPA and demonstrate that you’re capable of managing college-level work.

What are the minimum test scores required for admission to Yale?

This should come as no surprise, but to be looked seriously as a Yale applicant, you’ll need extraordinarily good exam scores.

Yale’s average SAT composite score for admitted students is 1505. (which rounds up to 1510). This translates to a Math score of 745-755 and an Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 750-760. To put it another way, you’ll need a near-perfect score to be considered.

Yale requires all SAT/ACT scores to be submitted, but the admissions committee can only look at a student’s highest officially recorded score on each section of the SAT/ACT.

If your SAT score isn’t yet 1510, you should definitely consider retaking the test to come as close to that as feasible. Make a strategy, commit to studying, and put in the effort.

The average ACT score of admitted Yale students is 34, which is slightly lower than the average SAT score. However, 34 is still a great score, and if your ACT score is less than 32, you should retake the exam.

Due to COVID-19, Yale has decided to make the test optional for students applying in the 2021-2022 admissions cycle. This is likely only a temporary change for highly selective institutions like Yale, as we describe in more depth in our piece on schools not requiring the SAT/ACT due to COVID-19. If you already have a high SAT/ACT score (as indicated above), you should submit it; however, if you don’t, you should consider whether taking (or retaking) the SAT or ACT is worth the health risk and expense.
