Since the 1960s, the Departments of Political Science and Economics have had a major and persistent influence on positivist social science, ranking in the top five in their respective fields.  The Chemistry Department is known for its contributions to synthetic organic chemistry, including the first lab-based morphine synthesis. The university’s Old and Middle English texts and knowledge are housed in the Rossell Hope Robbins Library.  Rochester is also home to the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, a national laboratory funded by the US Department of Energy.

Winners of the IB Scholarship have excelled in one of the most demanding college preparation programs available. Students who successfully complete the International Baccalaureate diploma at Wilson Magnet High School will be qualified for a full tuition IB Scholarship as part of the University of Rochester’s landmark agreement with the Rochester City School District.

From 1900 to 1935, Benjamin Rush Rhees served as the university’s president. He was instrumental in establishing Rochester’s three complementary campuses: our College’s home on the beautiful River Campus, the Strong Memorial Hospital Medical Center, and the world-renowned Eastman School of Music in downtown Rochester.
