Different Canada Immigration Pathways

Immigrating temporarily or permanently to Canada is a personal decision that must be made before getting your visa.

Whatever your decision may be, there are different Canada immigration pathways that you can use and some of them are discussed below;

  1. Permanent Residence (PR)

Permanent residence is intended for people wishing to settle in Canada for the long term. Therefore, anyone who obtains a permanent resident status has the same rights and duties as a Canadian citizen. It is also possible to work full time or part-time in the country.

However, there are some limitations which include; the right to vote, the right to stand for election and the right to hold a job that requires high-security clearance level.

  1. Temporary Work Permit (PTT)

This is another immigration pathway whose request must be made jointly with a Quebec employer. Therefore, it is MANDATORY to have a job offer before applying for a work permit.

The proposed job offer must be full-time. Meanwhile, you must have been linked to your employer by the temporary work permit.

However, you should only work on the job title for which you are hired. It is also not possible to study when you have a PTT.

The PTT open opportunities for spouses which allows an open work permit (PTO). Yes, the PTO request is personal and is linked to the PTT request.

It must be done simultaneously with the spouse’s PTT request. You can follow the steps highlighted below to get your PTT;

  1. Find an employer who wants to hire you temporarily. Meanwhile, it must be a full-time job offer.
  2. Apply for the Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) and request for a labour market impact study (LMIA) (employer)
  3. Request for the PTT – While waiting to receive the CAQ and LMIA from the employer, familiarize yourself with the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) site and start gathering and scanning the required documents. Upon receipt of the CAQ and LMIA provided by your employer, you should submit your PTT request online.

 

  1. The Open Work Permit (PTO)

It is possible to obtain an open work permit (PTO) as the spouse of a person who has obtained a work permit, under certain conditions. However, below are some things you must know about the PTO.

  • It is possible to work full time or part-time.
  • It is possible to work for any employer.
  • It is possible to renew the PTO only if the spouse renews his PTT.
  • It is not possible to study with the PTO.
  • Health and social services professionals must perform a medical examination on you by using a doctor designated by Citizen and Immigration Canada (CIC). A period of approximately six weeks is required for the analysis of the results.

 

  1. The Working Holiday Permit (PVT)

This Canada immigration pathway is available to young nationals of countries which Canada has signed a reciprocal bilateral agreement or agreement on youth mobility.

The WHV is for a period of twelve or twenty-four months depending on the agreements. It allows you to work for any employer where the age limit for obtaining it ranges between 30 or 35 depending on the country.

However, it is possible to apply for a PTT before the PVT expires (provide for the delays associated with the procedures). It is also possible to work full time or part-time.
