Elon University’s Brief History

In 1872, the Southern Christian Conference, subsequently known as the United Church of Christ, sought to establish a college in North Carolina. The church attempted to establish a college in Graham, but the board of trustees was unable to find suitable land in the town. In 1888, the Southern Christian Conference opted to locate their college at Mill Point, a train halt on the North Carolina Railroad, after searching various locations.

The property for the new college, located five miles from Burlington, was densely forested. Following the clearing of the site, the Southern Christian Conference decided to call the college Elon, which is the Hebrew word for oak. Elon College was founded in 1889 with 76 students and William S. Long as its first president. Elon offers four-year liberal arts programs from the beginning of the university’s existence.

Elon College, an Alamance County municipality, was founded in 1893 in the area surrounding the college. Incoming citizens and business people developed lots around the school, and Elon College’s streets were named after important figures in both the Christian Church and the college. The college’s first Glee Club, a baseball team, and the printing of Elon’s yearbook, the Phi Psi Cli, were among the improvements made in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Despite the fact that Elon College had begun to establish itself as a major academic institution in Piedmont North Carolina, the school was nearly devastated by fire in 1923. The main building of the school was destroyed by fire on June 18th. The library, chapel, and numerous classrooms were all destroyed, in addition to the records. The board of trustees decided to rebuild Elon after the fire, and five new facilities (a library, auditorium, and three classroom and office buildings) were completed in 1924. The same five structures that were finished in 1924 “remain at the center of the central campus” today (Powell, p. 391).

Leon E. Smith became Elon College’s fifth president in 1931, and he served for twenty-five years, making him the school’s longest-serving president. Elon went through several difficult circumstances during Smith’s tenure, primarily due to the Great Depression. President Smith was successful in convincing staff members to accept lower compensation and launching a fresh fund-raising effort for Elon University. Elon enjoyed rapid development following WWII, with returning servicemen and women enrolling in 1946, bringing the total student body to 700.

Elon College expanded its graduate programs in the 1980s, including those in teaching and business administration. In the 2000s, Elon grew to become the state’s third-largest private school, and in 2006, a law school was added to the school’s offerings. The board of trustees decided to alter the name of Elon College when the student body grew to nearly 4,000 students and the number of degrees offered increased. As a result, Elon College became Elon University in 2001, and the neighborhood surrounding the college became known as Elon.
