Different certificate types

There are three different types of certificates. The most common is the TEFL, or Teaching English as a Foreign Language certificate. This can be taught over four weeks full time, or over a longer period of time on a part-time basis.

The TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is also very popular and is equivalent to TEFL.

You may also hear about CELTA (The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), which is offered by Cambridge University’s teaching arm. CELTA courses are more intensive than other TEFL courses and involve observed teaching practice. They take just one month full-time but tend to be more expensive than other TEFL courses at around $1,500 USD in total cost—although they are widely recognized by employers and have an excellent reputation within the industry compared with other certificates such as DELTA, Trinity CertTESOL or SIT TESOL.

Certificates generally offer about 120 hours of combined classroom and teaching practice time, though some countries have particular requirements concerning the nature of training received before applicants can teach there legally (see below for country-by-country information).

Online TEFL certification

An online TEFL course is the most convenient option for someone who wants to become TEFL certified. You can complete the coursework from anywhere in the world, and you don’t have to change your schedule or postpone any other plans you have. Plus, if you choose an online course, you don’t have to be a native English speaker (or even be fluent in English) before starting your course. It’s like getting a certificate without going to physical class—you get all of the information and make all of the connections that would otherwise happen in a classroom through an online learning platform.

However, while there are many benefits to getting your TEFL certification online, it’s not always cheaper than its in-class equivalent. As mentioned above, many organizations offer discounts on their courses every so often. But if your school doesn’t offer one when you want it (or has already used up its quota), then getting a traditional certificate might actually be less expensive than paying full price for an online one.

In-class TEFL certification

If you’re thinking about becoming a TEFL certified teacher, you’ve likely come across the two main types of in-class courses. They are called 4-week and 6-month in-class TEFL certification because… duh.

4-week courses are highly intensive, requiring about 120 hours of study time. However, since these classes are so condensed, students must be able to attend the course full time. This is why 4-week courses are more expensive than their 6-month counterparts—though there may be less flexibility in scheduling, they get you certified quickly and efficiently, with many only requiring one class rather than a series of classes over several months.

6 month courses on the other hand, cost a lot less than 4 week courses but require you to complete between 200 – 300 hours of study time (depending on where you do your training). With these types of courses there is more flexibility since it isn’t necessary for you to attend full time for six months. But that means that it will take longer to become fully TEFL certified if you choose this path.

Combined TEFL certification

While classroom courses are more expensive, they also count for more credits in most cases. The general rule is that one hour of classroom instruction will equal three hours of online instruction. That means a 20-hour course counts for 60 hours overall, and therefore qualifies you for a 120-hour certification.

Another benefit of teaching English abroad is that some countries offer critical need bonuses to teachers who stay on with their schools for the year or longer. In Korea, you could get an additional $10,000 bonus if you work with an underprivileged school in what’s called the EPIK program!

There are different ways to get a TEFL certification and they vary in price.

When considering how much TEFL certification costs, you should take into account that there are different ways to get your certificate and each has its own price. Although the average cost of a TEFL course is around $2,000, online and classroom-based courses can start from as little as $500, while more expensive courses cost close to $5,000. There’s even more costly distance learning courses that run up to $10,000 in total!

The price of your TEFL certification depends on several factors:

  • Whether it’s an online or in-class course. Online courses are generally cheaper than ones based in a classroom. A 120-hour combined TEFL course is also an option, which combines the flexibility of distance learning with supervised teaching practice. This type of course typically costs around $1,200-$1,500 and your teaching practice may be included or have an additional fee tacked on top (around another few hundred dollars).

These courses are often provided by specialist training providers and educational institutions. The length of the course, whether it’s online or face-to-face and what qualifications you’ll receive at the end all vary depending on which you choose to attend.

The number of hours a course requires varies.

The number of hours a course requires varies greatly from country to country. Courses in the UK are usually 120 hour on-site courses, which can be taken full or part time. If you want to teach in the EU, you need to take at least a 120 hour course. Most online courses will provide this certification if passed successfully and many people take them before they start teaching. In China, there are no minimum hours required for a TEFL certification course but it is recommended that you have at least 100 hours of training before looking for work as well as a degree and at least two years of work experience. This can be taken either on-site or online and once again, many people choose to take an online course before they start working in China so that they are fully prepared when they arrive.

In Thailand, most teaching contracts require that teachers have only an undergraduate degree but if you have more experience with TEFL then your salary will reflect this. It is common for teachers to do an on-site TEFL course while living in Thailand because it is cheaper than doing one back home and cheaper still than going over there without any qualifications! There’s also the added benefit that you’ll get to know your way around the city during your training!

If you want to teach in Europe, you’ll likely need at least 120 hours of training.

A teacher with a TEFL certificate may find it easier to get hired at an English language school abroad. This is especially true in Europe, where employers typically require teachers to have at least 120 hours of TEFL training. Having the certificate will also make you eligible for teaching jobs at several different institutions abroad – including public schools, private language schools and corporations that hire teachers to teach their employees English.

If you want to teach in Asia, you’ll likely need at least 100 hours of training. In Latin America, on the other hand, you may not need any qualifications or training at all because there is such a high demand for native-English speaking teachers there.

If your goal is to teach English abroad without a degree or without being certified as a teacher, then completing an online TEFL course can give you sufficient training and experience to do so. On top of that, completing one of these courses can show potential employers that you have the right skills and qualifications needed for the job – even if they don’t require it in their requirements!
