Structure of Master of Philosophy Degree

A Master of Philosophy consists of an independent, supervised research project that the student, their supervisors, and the Head of School all agree on. Students can pursue the degree entirely through research or through a combination of research and coursework. In addition, through the University’s Career and Research Skills Training (CaRST) program, all Master of Philosophy students must complete a minimum of 60 hours of relevant professional development activities.

Students in the 100% research stream earn their degree entirely through the examination of a thesis; however, students in the mixed research and coursework stream earn one-third of their degree (15 units) through coursework and the remaining two-thirds through research, resulting in a proportionally smaller thesis. Coursework can be chosen in conjunction with supervisors from among the University’s applicable Master by Coursework or Honours level courses.

The fulfillment of a number of major milestones is used to measure progress toward the degree. These milestones allow the University to assess progress and ensure that candidates are well supported in their efforts to complete their degrees on time.

Examiners of a Master’s thesis are looking for evidence that the candidate has:

exhibited competence in the selected field by wise selection and implementation of proper methodology to yield significant results demonstrated the capacity to critically assess these outcomes presented a clear and well written thesis

MPhil degrees in the USA.

In countries like the United States, the MPhil is less frequent. This is due to the fact that the first half of an American-style PhD program is devoted to teaching rather than research.

Most US PhD students transfer to the final ABD (‘all but dissertation’) stage of their programs rather than upgrading from (or being awarded) an MPhil.

MPhil degrees in the Europe.

MPhils are not often awarded by European universities.

Within the Bologna Process, the MPhil is recognized (which organises qualification cycles across Europe and the UK). In European higher education systems, however, the distinction between master’s and doctoral level courses is much clearer.

Degrees that fall somewhere between a master’s degree and a complete doctorate (such as the MPhil and MRes) are less popular.

Who should pursue an MPhil degree?

The MPhil is frequently overshadowed by the PhD, or misinterpreted as the result of a failed PhD. (or failed PhD upgrade). In reality, there are a slew of compelling reasons to pursue a standalone MPhil.

You may have discovered a smaller study topic that fascinates you but isn’t large enough to warrant a PhD. If that’s the case, an MPhil project could be great for you, as it will allow you to complete your study without having to change or extend it.

Alternatively, you may choose the MPhil to the PhD for professional reasons, as an MPhil delivers advanced research skills and expertise that are recognized by a variety of employers.

Of course, a PhD illustrates these as well. However, outside of academia, the increased benefit of a doctorate may not be as considerable.

What is it like to pursue an MPhil degree?

A master’s degree can be studied in one of two ways: You can enroll in the program as part of a PhD program. You can also enroll in a stand-alone MPhil program.

The length and assessment of your course will be determined by the type of your registration, but the material will remain the same.

Both MPhil registration are pure research degrees. This sets the MPhil apart from other research master’s degrees (like as the MRes), which still involve some teaching courses.

You’ll be assigned an expert supervisor, just like a PhD student. They’ll be in charge of leading your project and giving mentorship to help you grow as a researcher.

You’ll meet with your supervisor on a regular basis to discuss your ideas and receive comments on your work in progress. However, you will spend the most of your time working on your own initiative and accepting responsibility for defining and accomplishing goals.

What is the duration of an MPhil?

When pursued as a full-time degree, a solo MPhil usually lasts two years. Alternatively, you might study part-time for four to five years.

Normally, MPhil registration in a PhD program lasts one year. After completing an upgrade exam, you will be upgraded to full PhD registration.

What criteria are used to evaluate an MPhil?

Your MPhil will usually not feature any taught modules or coursework assignments because it is a research degree. Instead, your argument will be judged solely on its own merits.

An oral examination will be conducted, similar to the official viva voce that culminates in a PhD. In front of a panel of examiners, you’ll discuss and defend your work.

Upgrades to MPhil follow a somewhat different procedure.
