In manufacturing plants another major role for industrial engineers is optimizing plant layouts so that overall efficiency is maximized. This might involve moving entire departments into new locations within a plant so that every worker has easy access to all the inputs they need for their job; it might also involve finding new ways to minimize wasted space while maximizing output potentials at each station in a long assembly line process.

The cost of living and tuition fees were two of the biggest challenges for us when deciding where to go to school. We decided on Georgia Tech because it was close enough that we could visit our families without having to take a lot of extra time away from classes, but far enough away that we wouldn’t have to worry about going over our budget on rent or food (we have an extremely strict frugal student lifestyle).

The application process took about six weeks. We chose not to apply early because we wanted more time to think over all of our decisions before committing full-time for four years, and gave ourselves more room for mistakes if something didn’t work out as planned. Once we sent off our applications, there was a waiting period before any action was needed from us until November 1 when decisions would be made based on our results on December 5 (the deadline). Our first step was choosing where we wanted to be admitted, which required waiting a week before being contacted by one office and then being called into an interview with another office three days later (both interviews were scheduled within two days after calling a specific person requesting them).

We submitted five documents: two personal essays, two recommendations forms (one each), one extracurricular form, and one medical form (for health insurance) that would need completing through an online portal once admitted since there is no paper copy available at Georgia Tech’s mailing address during mail call at O’Kane Hall where your mail goes through while you are attending
