On February 18, 1891, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro was created by a legislative act. Joyner, and M.C.S. Noble aided McIver, but the University owes its foundation to him more than to anybody else.
The University’s mission has evolved over the last century, as seen by its succession of names. It was first known as the State Normal and Industrial School, then as the State Normal and Industrial College from 1897, and finally as the State Normal and Industrial College until 1919. It was known as the North Carolina College for Women from 1919 to 1931, and then as the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina from 1932 to 1963. The Greensboro campus was recommended to become coeducational at all levels of instruction by the Board of Trustees in 1962. The name of the university was changed to The University of North Carolina at Greensboro by an act of the General Assembly in the spring of 1963. African American students were accepted for the first time in 1956, and men were enrolled as part of the general student population for the first time in 1964.
The Woman’s College Section of the Alpha of North Carolina Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was established in December of 1934, during the Consolidated University’s years. (The Chapel Hill Alpha Chapter is the one.) The Epsilon Chapter of North Carolina was established on this site on February 17, 1956. The national Phi Beta Kappa organization named UNCG’s chapter the best on a public university campus in the US in 2006.
