History of Southern Arkansas University 

Southern Arkansas University (SAU) is a four-year university founded in 1909 and located in the town of Magnolia, just 20 miles from the Louisiana state line. 

SAU has four undergraduate colleges: Business, Education, Liberal & Performing Arts, and Science & Engineering. The SAU Farm on campus, which comprises both crops and cattle and can enable for practical application of a student’s academic research, is an important aspect of the Agricultural Sciences programme. 

SAU offers fifteen master’s programs in the field of graduate studies. A master’s degree in elementary or secondary education is a two-year program with four distinct concentrations. SAU’s sports teams play in NCAA Division II and are known as the Muleriders. Cross country, golf, and rodeo are among the seven men’s and seven women’s sports programs. SAU’s mascot, in addition to the team name, is the Mulerider, who rides university mule Molly Ann into events. SAU’s’mulegating,’ which involves partying, grilled food, and family celebrations, is used to prepare for football games. 

Bed Races, which began in 1981 and are now an annual event at SAU, entail two twin beds being raced down the street on bicycle tyres in the hopes of winning the Bed Race Trophy.

Facilities 

SAU continues to expand, with new construction enhancing the environment of the university’s lovely campus. The state-of-the-art Agriculture Center and Story Rodeo Arena are still relatively new additions to campus. 

These new structures, along with the Mulerider Activity Center, are among the many new additions to the Magnolia campus. The SAU Science Center, which is 60,000 square feet, the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center, baseball’s Walker Stadium, Mulerider Athletics’ Ribble Weight Training Center, and the extension of the Wharton Nursing Building are among them.
