Get your undergrad degree
The first step to applying to medical school is getting your undergraduate degree. You must have a bachelor’s degree, and it needs to be in the relevant field. For example, if you want to become a doctor of physical therapy, then you need an undergraduate degree in the physical sciences.
For most people this means completing four years of coursework at an accredited university. As long as they meet their school’s requirements and get good grades—GPA 3.5 or higher—they should be fine on this front.
Take the MCAT
- The MCAT is a standardized exam that gives medical schools an objective way to compare applicants.
- The MCAT is offered year-round at various locations around the country. You can take the test multiple times if you want to improve your score, but keep in mind that medical schools look at your best score when they consider your application.
- The test consists of four sections: chemical and physical foundations of living systems; biological foundations of living systems; psychological, social and biological foundations of behavior; critical analysis and reasoning skills.
Decide where you want to apply
Choosing a school is a very important decision. It’s important that you do your research so that you can be confident in your choice. The first step is deciding which schools to apply to, but after that, how do you choose?
There are several factors that should go into choosing the best school for you:
- Cost of attendance
- Location/distance from home (if applicable)
- School culture and student body population (small vs. large; urban vs. suburban)
- Curriculum offered by the school (major specialty)
In order for this process to work out well for everyone involved, it’s important to make sure that all of these pieces are considered before making any decisions about where or if someone should attend college at all!
Prepare your application package
- Make sure you have a good GPA and MCAT score.
- Have good letters of recommendation.
- Have extracurricular activities that demonstrate your interest in medicine.
- Have volunteer experience that shows compassion for people, commitment to service, and ability to work on teams.
- Have research experience that demonstrates your ability to think critically, ask questions and find answers, read a scientific article or text critically, draw conclusions from data or information presented in writing or verbally (in person). If you haven’t done research already, it is recommended that you do some independent reading about what it takes to design experiments so that when the time comes for interviews at medical schools they will be able to ask questions about how one would go about conducting a research project independently if one were interested in becoming an MD/PhD candidate later on down the line after completing basic medical school requirements first before applying again for admission into specialized programs like those offered by Harvard University Medical Center where I work currently as Chief Resident Physician (CRP) during my final year after graduating with my Master degree in Public Health Science / Epidemiology (MPH).
Interview with admissions representatives
At this point, you will have already completed a number of forms and applications. In an ideal world, your application would be complete and ready for review. However, in reality there’s a good chance that it’s not yet complete. The next step is to interview with admissions representatives at the school (or schools) you are interested in attending to answer any lingering questions they may have about your application or yourself as a student. Your interviewer will most likely be someone who has been involved with the admissions process at their institution for years and has seen it all—so don’t worry about being nervous!
Interviewing is also an opportunity for both parties: You get the chance to ask questions about school life and programs; they get the chance to learn more about what makes you special as a candidate for their program/school. They’ll want to know why medicine is meaningful for you; why their program is right for you; what sets them apart from other institutions where you may apply; how well did past applicants perform academically compared to yours? etc..
The application process can be long and grueling, but it’s not impossible.
The application process can be long and grueling, but it’s not impossible. The road to medical school may seem daunting at first, but if you’re willing to put in the work and are passionate about a career in medicine, you can achieve your dream of becoming a doctor.
The first step is getting an idea of what schools you want to apply for and whether or not they offer the kind of program that interests you.
