Brit Marling is one of my favorite artists right now. She understood what kinds of characters she wanted to play, so she trained herself to write, teamed up with two of her university filmmaker pals, and made those films. Brit is really open about the fact that she couldn’t have done it without a team behind her, and I’m glad she understands that.
I talk about how a film set is really just a little city when I lecture in film schools. You’ll find doctors and cooks, as well as artists and creatives, builders and painters, accountants and IT technicians, and much more. A movie is truly the work of a group of people. Many of these groups are formed as a result of film and acting classes. I work for a film firm consisting of creatives with whom I went to film and acting school, and many of whom have since joined because they, too, met through school.
