How to Apply to Montana State University

How do I apply to Montana State University?

To apply, you’ll need to submit an application for admission and your supporting documents. You can find the application at:

The application fee is $30 for U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and those with a qualifying visa if submitted by April 1 (or $45 after April 1). The fee for international students is $65 for all submissions. We do not require or accept fees from applicants who are applying for our certificate programs or graduate school programs. We also have a waiver process that allows applicants to apply free of charge if they meet certain criteria related to income level, active military service and other situations.

If you are transferring from another college or university and want to receive credit for previous coursework, you must provide official transcripts of your academic history—including any courses you’re currently taking—to the MSU Office of Admissions by July 1 (fall semester) or December 15 (spring semester). Official transcripts can be sent electronically via eScript Safe or Parchment Exchange services as long as they are sent directly from the high school or college registrar office to MSU’s Office of Admissions at admissions@montana.edu .

What are the requirements for admission?

Three things that are required of you are:

• High school transcript
• Official test scores from the ACT or SAT
• A personal statement and recommendation letter, both of which should be written in English and sent directly to the university.

What if my high school record or GPA does not reflect my true academic ability?

If you have had extenuating circumstances in your life that have affected your academic performance, you may submit a personal statement to explain why your grades are not as good as they should be. If you have a low GPA, you should be prepared to explain why, and some students may want to include this explanation in their application. Some students may also wish to provide an explanation for other situations that can negatively impact high school records, such as disciplinary problems or learning disabilities. You may indicate these on the “Additional Information” page of the Common Application or MSU Application.

Are there other factors that affect admission?

Yes, there are other factors that affect admission. For example, if you have not taken any AP or IB classes, any college-prep classes (College Composition courses), a foreign language, elective courses, or college courses while in high school—any of these will hurt your chances of getting accepted to Montana State University. Also, if you have not taken any math classes in your junior year besides Algebra II and Geometry (and even then it’s considered weak), this does not look good for you. However, you can still be accepted by Montana State University without any of the mentioned items above—you just need to have really strong ACT scores which will make up for the lack of academics.

What is the application deadline?

Application deadlines are:

• December 1 for priority consideration for spring semester
• April 1 for priority consideration for fall semester
• August 1 for priority consideration for winter semester

Once logged in, you will be able to monitor the status of items that we have received as well as those that are still outstanding.

When will I receive a decision on my application?

Once MSU receives your application, it will take about two to three weeks for us to process your file before we can make an admission decision. This is why we recommend that you submit all of your application materials at least three weeks before the deadline. Please note, some programs have earlier deadlines and students who apply for scholarships are encouraged to apply by December 1.

Decision letters are typically mailed out by the end of February. Once you receive a decision letter, please let us know if there have been any changes in your contact information or if you would like to appeal our decision.

What documents are required to complete my application file?

Now that you’ve taken the time to gather all of your application materials, you can finally begin the process of applying to Montana State University. In order to do so, take a look at the following documents that are required:

• Official high school transcripts are required in order for us to evaluate both the academic and extracurricular components of an applicant’s background. Official transcripts must be sent directly from the appropriate high school(s) and must be accompanied by official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended, including not only those completed in the US but also international schools as well.*
• Official college transcripts are required for admission purposes for prospective students who have already graduated from high school. If you have not yet graduated from high school, and would like us to evaluate your application on completion of a GED or home study course in lieu of attending high school, we will need official transcripts from any post-secondary institutions attended and will consider this information when reviewing your application file.*
• The ACT is required for applicants who have completed no more than one year (fall & spring) of education beyond high school; otherwise, the SAT or ACT exam is strongly recommended. – Some colleges may require one or both scores.*
• AP/IB credits are accepted if they were earned via a standardized test such as AP exams, IB exams or CLEP examinations.*
• Non-refundable application fee is $30; this fee is paid upon submitting our online application. International students should contact us before paying their non-refundable application fees.*
