Subject Requirements at the University of California (UC)
2 Years of history / social sciences are required
One year of world history, civilizations, and geography; and one year of U.S. history or one-half year of U.S. history and one-half year of civics or American government.
4 years of english are required
Four years of college-preparatory English that includes frequent and regular writing as well as classic and contemporary literature reading. This criterion can be met with no more than one year of ESL-type training.
3 years required, 4 years recommended in math
Three years of college-level mathematics, including elementary and intermediate algebra, as well as two- and three-dimensional geometry. Approved integrated math courses, as well as math courses taken in the seventh and eighth grades that your high school deems as equal to its own math courses, may be used to meet part or all of this requirement.
2 Years Required, 3 years recommended in Laboratory science

A single year-long VPA-approved arts course in one of the following disciplines: dance, drama/theater, music, or visual art.
Electives for college Preparation – 1 year required
One year (two semesters) of electives from the following areas, in addition to those required in “a-f” above: visual and performing arts (non-introductory level courses), history, social science, English, advanced mathematics, laboratory science, and a language other than English (a third year in the language used for the “e” requirement or two years in another language).

CSU admissions decisions are heavily influenced by your high school grades. The grades in all of your college prep a-g coursework taken after the 9th through 12th grades are used to compute your high school grade point average.
Unless you have a grade point average of 3.0 and are a California citizen, grades are only part of the picture. The CSU uses an Eligibility Index calculation that takes into account your high school grade point average as well as your SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Test score. Even if your GPA is higher than 3.0, you must take the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT.
You can determine your eligibility index if you have your high school GPA and the results of your SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Test. You can immediately discover if you match the minimum admission requirements from there. Keep in mind that certain universities have greater requirements for specific majors or students who live outside of the area.
