How to Apply to Universities in Australia

Choose your university and course.

Next, you’ll need to choose your university and course. It’s important that you choose a course that is relevant to your goals – for example, if your goal is to get into politics after graduation, then political science might be the best choice for you. If your goal is simply to earn more money as soon as possible, then business studies may be more suitable.

It’s also worth considering what sort of job opportunities are available in each field. For example, if you want to become an architect (a very popular career path), there are less than 50 universities teaching architecture degrees in Australia compared with over 300 teaching law degrees!

Understand the entry requirements for your chosen course.

Before applying, you must first ensure that the course you are interested in is suitable for you. Some courses may have minimum requirements such as a certain grade average or subject specific prerequisites. Check the course description and entry requirements carefully to ensure that they are appropriate for your level of study. Sometimes it will be necessary to complete a foundation year before beginning your degree (e.g., if English is not your first language).

If there are any prerequisites that you don’t meet, see if there is another similar course on offer which does not require them or consider pursuing some additional study so that when it comes time to apply, you will have completed all the necessary requirements

Check that you meet the English language requirements.

The Australian government requires all international students to have at least an IELTS score of 6.5, or a TOEFL iBT score of 88 (with a PTE Academic test result of 57). You must also meet English language expertise requirements to study in Australia.

If you’re applying for a postgraduate course, you must have an overall band score of 6 or above on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test, with no less than 5 in any component.

If you’re applying for undergraduate courses, your best bet is to take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or Pearson Test of English Academic exam and get scores that are acceptable by Australian universities:

  • TOEFL iBT – overall score: 80 with minimum scores of 20 each on Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing sections; 60 with minimum scores 16 each on Listening Speaking Reading Writing sections;
  • Pearson Test Of English Academic – overall score: 72; 50th percentile with 13 across all four skills

Make sure you have enough money to cover tuition fees, accommodation and living costs.

  • Ensure you have enough money to cover tuition fees, accommodation and living costs. The cost of living in Australia can vary widely depending on where you go and how much you spend, so make sure that you consider these factors when budgeting for your move.
  • Have a backup plan if your visa application is rejected or not decided on time. If this happens, it’s important that you have a back-up plan in place so that your study doesn’t get disrupted by the delay.

Submit your application to UAC (Universities Admissions Centre).

The Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) is part of the Australian Government Department of Education and Training. UAC is a statutory authority responsible for administering higher education entrance examinations, including the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), and the International Student Assessment (ISA).

Let UAC know which courses you want to apply for.

Once you’ve registered with UAC and added the courses you want to apply for, it’s time to submit your application. You can do this by clicking ‘Submit’ on the top right hand corner of your screen.

When you click ‘Submit’, a confirmation message will appear confirming that your application has been received by UAC and also an email from UAC acknowledging that they have received it.

Once your application has been processed by staff at UAC and approved for payment, an email will be sent to the address that is listed under ‘My Profile’ in My Record (the first tab). This will tell you whether or not there are any problems with your application such as missing documentation or incorrect course codes.

Pay the application fee to UAC.

Once you have completed the application and submitted it to UAC, you can pay the application fee. To pay, go to the University’s website and click on “application.” You will be able to see your status as “in progress” or “complete.” If it says complete, then you are ready to pay.

Once paid, a confirmation email will be sent from UAC confirming that your university has received your payment and is processing it.

It is important that you pay as soon as possible because there may be insufficient funds if payments are not made by their due date, which can result in penalties or delays in processing applications

Apply for accommodation.

Whether you’re a high school or university student, it’s important to apply for accommodation in advance.

You will not receive off-campus accommodation at the time of your offer when you enrol, so make sure that you have somewhere to live before then.

The type of accommodation options vary depending on whether you are studying at an Australian high school or university, as well as what city/town your campus is located in. Generally speaking though:

  • High schools may provide dormitories or homestay options (which is where students live with local families) only if there are no university dormitories available nearby. If this is the case – make sure you check out both before deciding which one works best!
  • Universities usually have a mix of on-campus living arrangements ranging from shared apartments through to single rooms in halls of residence buildings close by campus itself (or “at home” within walking distance).

Taking the time to complete these steps will help make sure that all is in order before you leave home!

  • It’s important to take the time to think about what you want to study. If you are unsure, talk with your teachers or visit the university website. They can help guide you in the right direction!
  • Make sure that all of your paperwork is completed and sent on time. This includes transcripts, test results and English proficiency test scores if necessary.
  • Make sure that all of your documents are translated into English if not originally in English (this includes language degrees). If a document does not have an official stamp on it, make sure it has been certified by a lawyer or translator before submitting it for consideration at a university or college in Australia or New Zealand .
